Batman: Rebirth (DC AU)

A Dark and Distant Future

It was the year 2552. The world has advanced miles beyond what we know and see today. Technology we cannot yet dream of is commonplace. Cybernetics are the new norm and as common as glasses, braces, or prosthetic limbs. Genetic modification is widely accepted as normal in modern society, and genetic mutation and malformations have all but been eradicated from the earth. Many diseases, including cancer, have had cures found for them, and only crop up in rare circumstances before being snuffed out with simple but effective genetic therapy treatments. Two lunar bases and a martian base have been established. While life for common man has improved over the past four hundred years, crime, poverty, corruption, corporate greed, and political influence still exist and pressure every aspect of life. Though wars still exist in third world countries, it seems a world far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life...

The End of the World

May 29th, 2552. No one knows what caused it. No one knows who launched them. No one knows what happened. All that is known for sure is that the world, at once, heaved, screamed, and now bleeds. In an instant, hundreds of ancient nuclear devices all a round the planet, many of them the ones that the US, Russia, Europe, and Asia had sworn they had destroyed, detonated. The vast majority were underground or under the ocean, but hundreds were still in bunkers, silos, and warehouses, mostly all but forgotten. In less than ten minutes, over two billion people died. In the days and months that followed, billions more would die of radiation poisoning, diseases, black carbine and acid rain, and earthquakes, and later, famine, cancers, starvation, and of course, other humans. This generation of heroes tried to pull the world together, but in the end, they too were lost to the madness and darkness that had consumed the world. Global cooling has wrapped the world in greenhouse gasses, and the people of the world cry out for someone, anyone, to save them...

Current Day

It is 2555. Three years have passed since the world was destroyed. Nuclear winter wraps the globe. The global population is estimated by experts to be under 10,000,000 humans in total, and the number continues to drop as nuclear winter temperatures drop even farther and poison rains persist.

Yet there is progress.

In many cities around the world, people are coming together, banding against the dangers the dark new world has brought to them. Together, they can defend each other against mutants, raiders, and those driven mad. Militias are formed and communication lines are bring brought back up by brave souls venturing into Wastelands to bring them up. They have even recently made communication with an existing functional satellite, though there has been no communication with the lunar or martian bases.

Gotham City is one of these cities banding together for strength. Almost a million people have traveled from all across the eastern side of the United States and Canada to seek shelter and protection among the ruins of Gotham, protected by the People's Militia of Gotham City, funded by those wealthy enough to afford such protection. As Gotham grows in population and power, so too does the corruption within the established seat of government...

Setting and Premise

The heroes of this time and age have failed the world. It is time for new heroes to rise from the ashes of the apocalypse, to stake their claims and do what heroes do best; save the world the best ways they know how. With the failures of the new heroes to prevent the end of the world and save those who could have been saved, their mantles have been abandoned. Instead, those of the past famous now in folklore and legend, who ran the streets over four centuries ago, have been adopted. Names that have not been heard for centuries are now whispered with reverence in the night.

Green Lantern.

Wonder Woman.

Flash.

Batman.

These are the names of the heroes the world needs once again. Rise and take your mantle. Save the world while there is still something left to salvage.

Character Creation

The heroes of legend, the mantles held deep in reverence and beloved by the world, have long since passed on. Every hero that has ever lived in the time we know, is dead. Superman himself, despite his apparent immortality, disappeared long before the nuclear explosions, and has not been seen in years. Equipment failure, loss of electricity and power, EMP pulses, and other outside influence have ensured that all but the most well protected and powerful are vulnerable.

Thus, these heroes are new heroes, based off of old heroes. Your concepts are completely new characters of your own designs, re-imagined ideas of the heroes and villains we love and love to hate. They should be unique and interesting, and fit well in a post apocalyptic setting full of cyborgs and mutants.

Examples from Previous Games:

Bane: A raider queen in charge of a full caravan of thugs fighting for the people of the Wastelands not welcome in Gotham City, set to raid every caravan she can headed to Wayne Tower. She relies on a genetic serum she found in an abandoned laboratory to keep herself ahead of the game and on top of her troops. Eventually, she plans to take Wayne Tower head on, and destroy the establishment. Gotham is for the people, not for the few.

Black Canary: The vocalists for an all female black metal band before the apocalypse, she now works as a mercenary for the People's Militia, rounding up raiders and dangerous mutants before they can cause true threats to Gotham City. Her main weapon is a sonic emitter stunner that was once used by police for non-lethal control of crowds.

Clayface: A mutant who's DNA structure has been incredibly deteriorated, and who's natural form is of what the people of Gotham call a Mud Mutant. With uncanny control over his mutations, he can transform himself identically into people he has already seen, but because of the mental trauma he has experienced, he is dangerous to all who do not know how to handle him. He has multiple personality disorder, each of which take on a different physical form, and which can change at any moment.
