Known Background:
John St. John-Smythe is the youngest son of Earl Thomas St. John-Smythe. Being far removed from any inheritance, John began to distance himself from the aristocratic St. John-Smythes at an early age. Petitioning for, and receiving, a position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, John 'crossed the pond' to study the most advanced electronics available at the time. He did well in his studies, and might have returned home to lead a quiet life at the helm of a technology firm if he hadn't read the book.
John was enthralled by the On The Road. He saw a little of himself in each of the notable characters that Jack met. Perhaps, thought John, if I can find and meet Dean Moriarty, Old Bull Lee, and Carlo Marx then I will find myself. His search was on. John rode the rails all over the US. When that wasn't enough, he began the trek to the same Eastern mecca so many of his peers had undertaken. This sort of travel took money, and his on the road education had given him the skills to get it.
Having received notice that his family was looking for him, John invented James Davies and began to work on the technical side of television. He soon discovered that the scarcity of those with the necessary skills made it easy to find work, and the fictional James Davies (with a little help from John's less reputable friends) soon grew strong enough to pass for real. After Katmandu (where he learned nothing) John traveled to Hong Kong, hoping to cross into China to find something that would teach him to find himself.
The first thing he found was that getting into China as James Davies was easier than getting out. After a somewhat merciless "interrogation" during which the authorities discovered that James Davies really did know absolutely nothing of importance, John was dumped into prison. Not dissuaded, believing that even this experience could teach him something, John set about learning the language. Several months later, an old man was dumped into the prison, and John surprised himself. The welcoming committee had surrounded the old man, and eventually he was kicked. The old man fell to the ground, whimpering, and John intervened.
After a sound beating, the welcoming committee left John whimpering beside the old man. The two began to speak, and the old man claimed he would reward John's intent in the only way he knew how. For two decades, Chen Ling secretly taught John his kung fu, eventually telling John that he had no more to teach. More than that, Ling became more of a father to John than John's own father had been, and John became more of a son to Ling than any of Ling's offspring. Time works on us all, and in 1979, before breathing his last, the Ling told John he should go home to his family. John watched them take away his teacher's body, gathered his few possessions, and prepared to sneak out of the prison. Before he could do so, he was released.
