Narissa Denarii

Name: Narissa Denarii

Occupation: Merchant, Privateer

Actual Age/Apparent Age: Late 600s/ Late 20s

Gender: Female

Sexuality: Flexible

Race/Species: Marisyrii Sea Elf

Appearance:  Like the rest of her race, Narissa is tall, standing at 5’10”. When on foreign soil she wears a pair of dark leather boots that give her an additional 2 inches of height. While out at sea Narissa, like all her race prefers to be barefoot. A close look will show there is a thin membrane of webbing between their toes and the soles of their feet produce a fine film that lets them keep their footing on any terrain. Her wavy hair is a deep red and is often pulled back into some sort of braid which comes to rest midway down her back. Like all of her race, her skin is a sun kissed golden hue, no matter how many or how few hours she is out in the sun she will always hold that sun kissed glow. Her eyes are a bright aquamarine placed above delicate high cheekbones. Her nose is slightly crooked from a break that wasn’t reset properly before it healed. All Marisyrii elves are a bit wider though the shoulders and have a more solid build than their main land cousins; Narissa is no exception to this. Her centuries at sea have given her the hard toned muscles of a sailor and the body of a swimmer that all her race tends to favor. Her hips and butt are on the slender side though by no means nonexistent. Her breasts are firm and perky, large enough to be attractive, but not so large as to get in the way while she’s in the rigging or fighting.

Whether on land or at sea Narissa prefers to wear a pair of form fitting sharkskin leather breeches dyed a deep burgundy with a matching cuirass over whatever shirt she grabbed for the day often in a deep purple shade. Both pieces of leather have the standard armor enchantments of her people plus a few extra she’s had added since leaving her active military service. A cutlass sits at her hip while she’s on land, while at sea a trident rests at her back in addition to the sword.

Marisyrii elves have a second form, one few outside their race has seen and lived to tell tales about. When their entire body is submerged beneath water, fresh or salt, for an allotted time gills open along their neck just below their pointed ears. Webbing appears between their fingers and their nails lengthen and harden, a paralyzing agent can be excreted from their nails in this form. The webbing that is always present between their toes expands and their feet widen a bit to allow them more power and agility beneath the water. They have a transparent third eyelid known as a nictitating membrane, which when combined with a smaller pupil and a change in the shape of their lens gives them the same clarity of sight below as above the water.

Personality:  Narissa is calculating, whether it’s in her business ventures or a sea battle, weighing the gains and risks. If the gain is great enough in her eyes it is worth the risk to herself to get it. When among her own kind or the few mainlanders she’s come to call friend Narissa is generally light hearted though if you look at her in the quiet moments you can see that something weighs heavy on her heart at times. When dealing with mainlanders she puts forth a more ruthless front, where her calculating nature may seem even a bit cold. Her people have a reputation as some of the fiercest pirates and naval forces of the world and it is expected that when a Marisyr ships docks on a shore not its own they uphold the image of that reputation when dealing with the ports inhabitants. Narissa has been known to scale this back a touch simply to make her business transactions a bit easier. But if she feels she is being swindled in even the slightest way she does not hesitate to remind those involved just why hers is considered one of the fiercest among the races of elves.

Abilities/Skills:
Martial Prowess ~ Like all elves, Narissa is very dexterous and agile which lends to her skill and precision whether it be hand to hand or a weapon. Narissa is skilled in the hand to hand combat style of her people, Sirith Quárë, which is effective both on land and in the water. Combined with her skills with edged weapon and spears she is a force to be reckoned with. Her preferred weapons are a cutlass for dry use and a trident when beneath the waves. Her speed and accuracy in a fight are enough to have earned her a place among the elite during her mandatory military service and moving to privateer status has not lessened her skill in any fashion.

Water and Air Magick ~ All Marisyrii elves have an extra affinity for working with water and air and all that falls within their domain as gifted to their race by the gods at their beginnings. From such simple workings as creating a light breeze and purifying a container of water to the elaborate storm working of the mage guard who keep watch over the storms that surround the island. Narissa considers herself of moderate skill in this area though some would say she undervalues her abilities. In addition to this extra affinity, she, like all elves has the ability to tap into the flow of power found in the world around her from the elements, to the telluric currents, and leylines.

Piracy ~ Narissa is a skilled sailor and commands of a small flotilla of ships that serve as merchant vessels, though as Marisyr ships they are also pirate vessels if the prize seems right. Like her, her crews are made up of those who chose to not peruse a life in the military once their mandatory service was completed yet still had the desire to be at sea. Issa has a knack for spotting when a vessel may have a hull filled with goods that could bring a pretty coin at market.

Merchant ~ In her years since leaving the military Narissa has spent her time building her lone ship and talent for making a smart bargain into a small flotilla of vessels exporting the sought after Pink Marisyr Salt, considered the finest salt in the culinary world, as well as other goods made on her island home, plus the contents of any ship unfortunate enough to cross their path in the open waters. And importing sought after items from the mainland to sell to other merchants and the populaces in a small shop run by her cousin.

History: Narissa hails from the Marisyr Kingdom, a large island nation seated in the middle of the ocean between the large continents of the world. It is a remote location surrounded by a sea of magical storms and maelstroms controlled by the elite storm guard of the island to safe guard it from outsiders. Only those who hail from Marisyr know the safe route through these obstacles to reach the single harbor entrance for the entire island.  Should an outsider make it though the storms they will find that the island appears to be nothing but a sheer cliff rising from the sea hundreds of stories tall and it would take them 10 days of continuous sailing in fair weather to circle it.

Within the island lays a rich and varied landscape of snowy mountain peaks, lush diverse forests, and lowland plains all dotted and crisscrossed with lakes, streams, and rivers.  It is within this picturesque landscape that Narisssa grew up learning the ways of her people. Her first two centuries of life were spent like that of so many elven children, learning the fundamentals of world, history, the arts, magick, combat  and so much more while also having the time to truly come to know herself, a privilege of the longer lived and immortal races.  Upon reaching the age of maturity she entered her required military service to her nation, from which there is no exemption. The next several decades passed with her learning the basic training of her peoples’ army and navies with her choosing to specialize in piracy when the time to pick among the three branches came. She served as an able bodied sailor and after a few decades rose to the position of midshipman, where she more closely studied as an apprentice of sorts to the various warrant officers aboard the ship.

It was half way through her contracted time in her specialty that she was recognized and given the option of transferring to a truly specialized group within the Marisyr Navy, the Raiders. The Raiders  are those who have left the service of the military with honors to do as they desired in life but upon growing older wish to live their remaining days at sea doing as they did in their prime, sea battles. Vessels run by Raiders are notorious as the most vicious and reckless of any Marisyr sailing vessel, for their high ranking officers intend to perish at sea preferably in battle.  Promising midshipman and young standing officers from both maritime branches of the military are selected to help man these vessels. Those approached are considered to be not only extremely talented sailors but fighters and magick wielders as well, to be able to keep up with the veteran Raiders. The risks are much higher than any other area of service but should one survive their time among the Raiders an officer’s commission is promised to those who chose to remain in the military.  If one decides to leave military service at the end of their contract, a sea worthy vessel that has been decommissioned for one reason or another and sizable severance purse are given as compensation, though this is not widely known for few who agree to join the elite crews choose it. Narissa jumped at the opportunity, not just for the chance to gain her officer’s commission but for the wealth of experience and wisdom she would have access to while sailing among such aged members of her race.

She found herself aboard the Unagi, as one of several young bloods assigned to the vessel along with its senior crew, one of whom was a relation on her mother’s side of the family.  The Unagi’s crew tended to favor the waters north of Marisyr where they were more likely to run into Ta’lonhyrii ships, which presented some of the best challenges in battle, though they would occasionally take a southern patrol. They rarely put into their home port, instead preferring to take on supplies, give shore leave, and make minor repairs on small islands or friendly port cities.

As the decades passed friendships and romances arose as they will at sea, some as constant and steadfast as the sun, others as fleeting as a spring breeze. Once the senior members had a feel for each other and the young bloods’ roles aboard the ship would shift and change to keep things fresh and to give the young bloods seeking that commission more experience in the roles they were aiming to acquire. This gave Narissa the very experiences that she’d been hoping for and that would influence the way she’d run her own ships and business in the future as well as some connections on the mainland. This practice would also lend to the tragic incident that lead to Narissa choosing to return to civilian life once her contract was done. She rarely speaks about what happened, even now a century later, and only when rip roaring drunk and stories of sea battles are being shared.  When the time came she took her ship and coin and never looked back.

Narissa spent some time simply enjoying being on land and dabbling in various arts and activities of her people, eventually she found herself missing the sea and started making small trips with some old friends to smaller ports to do some trading. She found that she had a knack for striking a good wager with merchants for the items she had brought from home for those she wanted to take back. At first she sold her imports to various merchants around the island but after some time she opened her own store with one of her cousins where the majority of her shipments are now sold. She has build herself a small flotilla of ships manned by those with whom she’d spent some time in the military with and their kin. As her business grew she found herself more often on the island in the shop than out at sea. She’s once more grown bored with land life and has taken to captaining her flag ship, Fallen Pearl. It is with a hull filled with Marisyr goods and a bit plundered along the way that she’s set her sights on the port of Al-Jalasa with the intention of finally meeting one of her newest contacts face to face.

Other information:  All ships that hail from Marisyr flag the nations flag, a large golden shark forming a crescent as it chases its tail against a field of aqua, the words Honor and Blood beneath it. FOr those souls brave enough to risk being on board the attacking ship in a sea battle Marisyr merchant vessels are among the safest means or sea travel.
