New Genesis
Once, life was as it is today. War and famine rule over areas, while pollution and corruption destroy others. Natural disasters become stronger with each one, making more and more of the world uninhabitable. The World Leaders gathered for a Climate Conference to discuss what should be done about what was happening, but none could come to an agreement of what should be done, stalling decisions, not believing the scientific proof, each arguing that their solution was the best.It wasnt until the meteors began that they started taking the idea that we were all in this together seriously. The meteors started small, dust fragments and rocks burning up in the atmosphere at first. Then larger boulders. Scientists and astronomers could not determine where, exactly, they were coming from other than they were vaguely tied to Orions Belt. No matter what they tried, the scientists could never determine when the meteors would come next.
The World Leaders gathered once again, this time determined to find some way to survive the pollution caused by the failing climate, now sped up by the meteors falling. Together, they devised the plan of building the Spire out of a material derived from combining steel and the fallen meteors when they discovered that such a combination made an impenetrable building material.
Crews worked day and night to complete the Spire - named New Genesis, and when it was finally done, decades after it began, a recorded message went out over every working radio, television, and phone to inform anyone listening that the project was complete and to head towards it for shelter as quickly as they could, the message giving GPS coordinates as well.
What was found when people arrived was a gracefully arched spire that seemed to touch the sky itself. It glowed with an inner light, leaving the edges darkened by the meteor materials protective layers. New Genesis had been equipped with the leading biodome science, proven as reliable years before the first meteors started to fall, and already put into place in some of the largest cities around the world.

Centuries after New Genesis was closed off from the hazardous world outside, variations had appeared in the population. Some could do what the old books called magic, others could shift forms, and still more changes appeared with each new generation. Rumors about these variations spread, each one growing more and more convoluted until it was common belief that if anyone learned a person had them, it would result in what amounted to a witch hunt.
So no one spoke of them aloud except to the most trusted of confidants. As the years went on, underground locations developed, hidden behind false storefronts and other methods, known only to those that were aware of the existence of such people, and spread by hushed word-of-mouth or magical means.
New Genesis has developed as any city would, with a city that one sees when they look only surface-deep, and another view entirely when looking close enough to see the cracks in the shiny veneer.
