Background: Ramses was born a slave in the plantations of eastern Virginia. He would grow up learning the ways of farming and the harshness of enslavement. He was just a young teenager when he made his way North to escape from the chaos of the Civil War and to rid his position as a slave. Due to his young age, he was unable to join the army until the antebellum period, from which point he sought to serve in the Union armies as a freeman. At 23, he left the army, disgusted at the frustrating obstructions to the Reconstruction efforts, to wander the land, seeking employment either as a farmer or rifleman.
