Marik Pavor

The Basics

Name: Marik Pavor

Gender: Male

Age: 27

Lineage: Son of Phobos

The Physical

Height & Weight: 6'2", 220lb

Hair & Eye Color: Black hair, amber eyes

Physical Description: Marik is very rough-looking man; rugged and intimidating so he's not particularly approachable. He's tall and muscular, though more bulky lean than massive like a bodybuilder. His sharp jawline is framed by a trim beard, and his amber eyes shine with a slightly brighter colouration than typical, almost giving them an illusion of an orange glow. He's got plenty of scars around his body, mostly from knife cuts with a couple being the result of gun shots. He also has a tattoo of the Greek letter Phi, Φ, on his left pectoral and another tattoo of a lion's head on his right shoulder. He doesn't put much though into his appearance, at all, and will usually choose practicality over presentability. As such he typically wears clothes that are easy to move around in, that being said, he is often seen in a leather jacket. He also wears a pendant of a small but unknown deep red gem so dark it's almost black, a couple commonplace rings that look more like wristbands for fingers than jewellery, as well as a single black stud earring on his left earlobe.

Alternate Form: None

Talents & Weaknesses

Skills: Skilled in close quarter combat as well as handling weaponry like knives and guns. He can read people relatively well, has plenty of street smarts and very sharp survival instincts.

Powers: Born of one of the personifications of fear, Marik has an aura that induces fear and panic, the intensity and range of which he has learnt to control to a considerable degree. His eyes properly glow red when he's actively asserting his aura and the closer someone is, the more intense the effects, even more so if there is direct physical contact, to the point where one might fall unconscious from fright if they aren't strong enough of mind. That being said, Marik can also reduce the range and intensity of his aura to such an extent where someone affected might only feel a slight shiver, or have the hairs at the back of their necks stand on end, and only if they are close enough. This is the level the aura is usually at.

As his father is the god of panic and rout, this aura typically induces the flight response rather than fight. This aura does not distinguish friend from foe and the only way Marik can selectively target people is by touch. The combination of fear and panic is used to disorient enemies, compromising their judgment and lowering their guard, which Marik often made use of in his past criminal activities. There is a caveat in that panic reactions are unpredictable, and especially if an affected person has power, be it a supernatural one or even just a gun, how they respond to such panic could potentially be disastrously dangerous. The reverse can also be true, in that a highly disciplined person with ample courage, determination and strength of will, can resist with varying degrees of success, to even brush off the effects of the fear.

Marik can also sense a person's inner fear. And given that Phobos and Deimos were warriors who often accompanied Ares in war, Marik is stronger and hardier than normal humans.

Since the war broke out and Marik learnt of his heritage, he has also been taught to use illusion magic to support his fear aura, though not much else beyond that.

Magic Items: A pendant given to Marik and Antares by their divine parents that allowed telepathic communication between them as a way of staying connected even if they weren't together. It has remained silent ever since his brother's disappearance.

Vulnerabilities: Despite the increased strength and toughness given by his lineage, fatal injuries are still fatal. Given that his powers affect a person's psyche, magic and divine powers that might counteract the effects can render his powers ineffective.

Because of his upbringing and heritage, Marik has no fear when it comes to conflict, but in that same vein, he has no experience dealing with fear on the emotional side of the spectrum. While he has no problems with fear pertaining to his grandfather's domain of war and battle, when it comes to his grandmother Aphrodite, the fear of loss and rejection is something he had never come to terms with. He can sense them in other people, but having lost his brother, the only person he loved, and having been rejected from home after home during his childhood, the trauma stayed with him and fear of such things happening again often plague his thoughts, as much as he tries to suppress them.

Under The Hood

Personality: Marik is overall, not the nicest person there is. With his upbringing, he learnt pretty early on that it's a kill or be killed world, and he will always prioritise his own survival. He is not trusting of new people, especially ones with flowery words and smiles on their faces, because in his experience, those are the trademarks of liars and backstabbers. He is brusque, a little arrogant and is sometimes direct to the point of rudeness. Of course, he himself is not above lying, and he very much has a "what do I get out of it" attitude.

That being said, Marik does have the capacity for love. He loved his brother after all. But these warm and fuzzy emotions have been locked away deep inside by years of emotional trauma as he and his brother were abandoned and rejected by family after family, followed by years of the cutthroat environment of crime. Ironically affected by the fear of loss and rejection himself, it won't be easy to dispel the tight hold his powers have over his own heart.

Backstory: Marik Pavor and his non-identical twin brother Antares Metus, were born of the gods Phobos and Deimos respectively (different fathers thus different surnames), and the same human mother, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Shortly after they were born, their inherited, innate powers of fear manifested uncontrollably and their mother was driven insane by fear and paranoia, until finally she abandoned them to the foster system. For years, they move from family to family, always being rejected and abandoned by each within a couple of weeks due to their powers of fear. Antares was always the more mature brother, and it was only in their teen years when he discovered their powers and taught Marik how to start controlling it, but by then the emotional trauma had already been well-established. Around that time, the two of them were stuck in the foster system, and had begun resorting to crime in order to survive. It started out as simple as pickpocketing and shoplifting, but before they knew it, they got involved with gangs and the greater underground criminal network. Marik and Antares both learnt to fight and survive, they had each other's backs and looked out for one another as they fought their way through life. Perhaps it was due to their parentage, but they felt strangely at ease with all the fighting.

However, in a turf war gone wrong, Antares and Marik got separated as they tried to escape, and though Marik survived, he could not find his brother. He tried searching for a body to no avail, and since then on, he focused his efforts on finding out what happened to Antares. And so after the war had broken out, Marik came to Rhodes to join the battle and maybe find a clue as to his brother's whereabouts, in case he had made contact with others of divine blood like them.

Connections: To be determined/possibly none.
