Maliah Mathace

..Wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity..

Name: Maliah Mathace
Nickname: Mal, Liah
Age: 28
Occupation: 2nd Year Resident at UW Medical Center

Theme song: Someone You Loved - by Lewis Capaldi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1yVCeXYya4

Faceclaim: Chloe Grace Moretz
Physical Description: Like her mother before her, Maliah was graced with a natural beauty.  Her dirty-blonde locks hang in waves just past her shoulders, but dry shampoo and messy buns have been her best friends since starting her residency.   A youthful appearance still clings to her round face, and she hopes that it will remain for a little while longer. Full, heart-shaped lips are one the feature she appreciates the most (she never leaves the apartment without a tinted lip gloss.)

The mixture of green and blue in her eyes is rare. The colors are prominent on different days and depend on what she is wearing.   When she has time, she likes to emphasize the shape and color with dark liner.  When examined carefully, the brown birthmark on the iris of her right is visible.  She does wear glasses, but they are not a permanent fixture on her face, only when she has to spend hours reading.

She stands at an intimidating height of 5 feet 4 inches, and her ferocity comes out when she is jumping up and down in hopes of reaching something from the top shelf.  Maliah is not super-model thin; instead, she has a shapely figure that reveals she enjoys running, salads,  but also pizza and popcorn, too.

Her taste in clothing reveals she was raised with wealth, and she spends too much money on shoes.   She knows how to dress from sophisticated chic to casual and everything in-between. Her current style leans more towards the latter, but she still appreciates a good night on the town where she can dress up a bit.

She does have a few piercings and a couple of tattoos from a brief wild stint in her late high school years.  The rings are in her ears and one in her nose that she kept.  She has a  blue rose tattoo on her right shoulder with her mother's date of death on the stem.  A compass on her inner left ankle with her and Remington's initials on it (she doesn't even remember getting this one, and she doesn't regret it.)  Her favorite is on her inner right wrist - a stethoscope with the tubing forming heart monitor lines.

Distinguishing Features: The color of her eyes and the way the subtle way they change colors depending on lighting and her clothing.  It is one of the features people tend to note and remember about her.

Personality Description:  Maliah is a true ambivert. She does not mind going out for a night on the city, having a few drinks, or hanging out with her friends. In fact, she enjoys social gatherings.   It has been said that her laughter and smile light up a room.

With that being said, when she is done - she's done.   Sometimes being 'done' means hanging out in her pajamas for a few days straight and not even texting back (or signing into any social media at all.)  She does not mind the solitude, embraces it well, and will sit for hours in a chair with a book in her hand and no sound around her.

She does have a pleasant bedside manner, and this is something that never changes.  When it comes to her patients, she talks them through everything and makes sure they are comfortable. She tries to be a welcoming presence in an otherwise dire situation. This makes the emergency room a perfect place for her - she loves calming the fears of those that come in and lives for watching patients walk out of the doors in a different state than they originally came in.

Apartment Number: 607
Time living at the Winslow: 6 months

What are some of your character's likes and dislikes? She lives and breathes medical: books, shows, and movies (so she can critique them).

Running: This has become her way to decompress after a long day at the hospital. A lot of times, Maliah begins and ends her day with a run.  It's been very therapeutic since the falling out between her father and siblings, and her separation from Remington.

Shopping and Photography: When she does get some free time, she tries to enjoy both of these. Retail therapy has been huge in her life the past six months, whether it's online or at a shopping mall.  She has dabbled in photography, and while she would never make a living doing it, she has enjoyed learning how to use a camera.

Dislikes:  Maliah hates people who make ultimatums and try to use them to force themselves into parts of your life. First, it was her father and then Remington, because of that, it leaves a bad taste in her mouth.

Horror movies, books, and television shows: She can stand next to some of the world's top surgeons and watch them open the chest cavity of a living human on the operating table, but she can't sit through the previews of the latest slasher movie.  Her ex-fiance loved them, but that meant her sleeping with the light on for weeks after.

Any other information you would like to share: Maliah is at a state of 'in-between.' She is trying to figure out who she is without her father's money and her ex-fiance. This is the first time she has been without either.

History:  Every family has a story, some bring happiness and joy, while others are filled with heartache.  To know a person, you must know their story, their family.

It is true what they say about opposites attracting, at least it was in the case of Marshall Mathace and Rosalina Benedict.  The two met during their college years at Yale University. Her only goal in life was to serve others by finishing her medical degree and becoming a missionary nurse in foreign countries without adequate healthcare. Marshall, on the other hand, desired to climb the proverbial ladder in business - he wanted money and prestige, but he also wanted Rosalina. She brought out the best in him and was, for lack of better words, his better half.

The two got married straight out of college. His quick advance in the lucrative business industry gave Rose the freedom to travel the world. She came home often, and together they balanced a long-distance relationship for the first year of their marriage. During one of their times together, Rose became pregnant with their first child, a son.  There was no hesitation in her decision to put her dreams and career aside to become a stay at home mother and wife to the love of her life.

She planned events, she kept the home in order, and she helped her husband whenever he needed it.  A year after their first son, Matthew, was born, Rosalina became pregnant with their second child, a daughter.  Macie was a firecracker from the get-go. She came six weeks early and to this day is on the go. Having both a boy and girl, Rose and Marshall decided not to expand their family anymore.

Six years after Macie's birth, a surprise pregnancy brought them Maliah.   They were thrilled with the news and welcomed a new child with open arms.  For the first few years of Maliah's life, her mother tended to the home and volunteered at a non-profit clinic. Maliah saw the joy that helping others brought her mother, and she knew from an early age that she wanted to follow.

When Maliah was fifteen years old, Rosalina received an excellent opportunity to spend three months in Africa with the Red Cross, helping bring medical care to those in need. Unfortunately, it was during this time that Rosalina contracted a deadly virus.  When treated promptly, it can be cured, but she was stubborn and continued to push herself to work for the needy.

 She died in Africa.

The death of Rosalina devasted the family.

Without their glue, the family began to fall apart. Marshall threw himself into his work, and the children went their separate ways, only seeing each other on holidays and a few times throughout the year.  Unfortunately, none of the children followed in their father's footsteps when it came to business.  They all saw how much time it pulled away from loved ones and passions. Matthew moved to Southern Georgia, married, and became a writer. Macie became a grief counselor.

Maliah followed her passion, like Rosalina before her.

After a brief wild stint following her mother's death, Maliah threw herself into her studies.  It was during this time she met Remington Hawkins.   The two became best friends, inseparable, and together they made it through high school (where Maliah graduated as valedictorian) , college, and the first few years of their young adult lives. For years, Remington was afraid to tell Maliah how much he loved her, but finally, at the age of 23, they started dating.

It was a smooth transition for them - a long time coming.

They dated for five years, even lived together, but when Remington decided he wanted to move forward, get married, start a family, Maliah hesitated.  He had been there for her during everything; she loved him more than herself, but not more than her career.  She did not believe she could be the wife she wanted or a mother when she was so focused on her residency on her work..

Remington was tired of waiting, so when he gave her an ultimatum, and she didn't choose him, they separated.. which is what brought her to the Winslow.

Maliah did not want to move from Remy's apartment in with a roommate, and she also did not want to ask her father for money (because it always came with stipulations). All she needed was a decent priced apartment, close to work, that she could afford on a measly medical resident's income.
