Malleable man

He appears to be an average man, barefoot, wearing green running shorts, a green turtleneck, and a green balaclava. Depending on when you look, his skin runs the gamut of tone and texture from Scandinavian pale to New Guinea dark. His eye color, also, tends to change without notice.


Cort Wirthlund had a pretty good life. He spent his childhood in a small farm town, neither scholar nor athlete and not the top or bottom of anything. Bagging groceries and stocking shelves at the Hy-Vee to work his way through junior college, he approached Betty Feeney after noticing one of his classmates (Betty) was a cashier at the store. The two soon became inseparable and married one year, to the day, after Cort approached her.
They graduated junior college, together, two weeks before they became parents. At this time, Cort chose to forego further education and find a job. Fortunately, he found work at a plant making industrial instruments. Focusing on family and working for them only, Cort slowly advanced through the business ranks. He and Betty had another child, and Betty began pursuing her dream of writing historical romances, while Cort finally reached the middle management ranks.
Then, on his way home from work, disaster struck. The tanker in front of Cort was labeled only "toxic waste", and when the thing jack-knifed and Cort rammed into the tank, and saw the red goo filling his car and moving like it was alive, Cort only thought about how much he would miss Betty. He woke, some time later, in the hospital. Betty and the kids were there, and he didn't feel bad, at all.
His discovery of his powers, concurrent with his family's notice of them, changed everything. Cort had gone through his comic book phase, as a child, and had lived his life accepting the responsibility that comes with power. He could do no different, now. As always, Betty agreed with him before he  could ask. The kids, of course, just thought it was 'cool'.
Because his shape and appearance were completely under his control, he didn't bother with a costume, and the Malleable Man quickly began to clean the streets of the city.
