A veteran of Soviet Ground Forces since 1967, Gvozden Volkov is an old T-55 tankman who progressed up the ranks through tenacity and cunning.  While his leadership style fluctuates between autocratic and coercive with a good bit of dedovshchina thrown in, he has mellowed over the years.  A die-hard communist who grew up on a pig farm near the border with UkrSSR, he married an equally fervent ¡Las Sandinistas! during his tour advising the FSLN.  It's her good cooking that have fattened up Volkov to the point where he'd have a hard time fitting into a tank these days.  Lucky for him, Volkov only has to make it into the cab of the unit's GAZ-66 logistics vehicle.
