Background
After their marriage in 1845 Angus (Patter) and Mirram Urquhart (Nee Benjamin - Matter) moved from Boston to a spot closer to more of their relatives in Greenville Maine. Over the next 18 years Angus & Mirram were blessed with the first of 32 offspring; Identical octuplets male 1847; sextuplets female 1851; identical female quadruplets 1855; sextuplets female 1859; Identical octuplets male 1863.

Angus and Mirram with the support of their relatives saw to it that the Urquhart brood were well cared for; and the offspring numbers were put to good use. From the age of 4 each child was required to assist in the upkeep of the farm, attend to stock and watch out for their siblings. During this time the elder boys also benefited from learning skills of riding, which was good enough to win quite a few local horse races, & hunting the woods for additional small animals and fowl that helped feed the large brood. Adam quickly found he had a knack at stalking the woodland critters.

Life in Maine was enjoyable, productive and rewarding, until the Southern States seceded which was quickly followed by the war.

As the war raged on the North American branch of the Urquhart clan were in the main one of the numerous providers of essential primary materials for the war effort. Hearing and seeing the effects the war had on the folk of Greenville; especially those who were friends of Adam and his siblings. As the War dragged on the Urquhart siblings concerns increased and they decided to take steps to help out in the war effort using alternative methods. After discussion amongst themselves the children decided that the eldest should enlist and face the same risks as others in Greenville. Learning of their children's plan Angus and Mirram agreed to allow their children's decision, provided only one of the boys went.

So it was that Adam drew the short straw and the next day Adam bid farewell to his Matter and siblings; travelling with his Patter to the closest induction station to enlist.

During basic training Adams Proficiency with long arm enabled him to be assigned to Company A of the 35th Main Infantry.
