Patrick was born on August 14th, 1840 in Caratunk Maine.  He is the grandson of Patrick Micheal Harper, a rifleman during the Napoleonic wars. Patrick grew up listening to tales of his grandfather's exploits and decided that when grown he would have his own stories to tell. Patrick went to school until he was 13, then struck out on his own.  He got a job working cattle in Texas. He showed an affinity with the horses and became a bronc buster, a job he quite enjoyed. Patrick grew up a typical hard drinking, hard fighting Irishman, never one to back down in a fight. He spent several years breaking horses for the trial drives, then joining the drives taking care of the remuda, the horses used in the drives. If wild horses were found and brought in he broke them and trained them to be added to the remuda.  He helped the cook prepare meals and learned his way around the kitchen, so to speak.

In 1859, with tensions rising between the North and the South, Patrick moved back to Maine and joined the Army where he was assigned to the 35th Maine. This is where he was when the shots were fired at Fort Sumnter, throwing the nation into war.
