Born in northern New York State, Alex had a peaceful life growing up with his family, going to a school until 15 and then apprenticed to a blacksmith. He expected that would set the course for his life - one day taking over the smithy or moving to a newly established town and setting up a shop of his own.

That was until the war came and swept everyone up in a wave of enthusiasm. Enlisting in the 44th New York Light Artillery, he trained to man and repair one of their guns in the field. She sailed  Late in 1864 he went and joined the 44th New York, being aboard the Oqunquit in January of 1865 when it sailed for North Carolina and ended up in a new world instead.
