Hashim

Biography
Hashim Kassab was born in the late nineteenth century among the Islamic community of the La Moreria quarter of Madrid. The lineage of his family can be traced back to the few Muslims who remained in Madrid after the Reconquest of 1492. Over the following centuries the muslims of La Moreira slowly increased as a consequence of the Spanish population growth, but remained a relatively closed cultural group. Since his young age, the elders noticed Hashim as a perspicacious Qur'an scholar, gifted with a brilliant capacity for argumentation and theological reflection. The the path for him was opened to become the new Imam by the end of second decade of the twentieth century. These were difficult times.  Catholic Church and other conservative sectors of Spanish society were making considerable efforts to erase any trace of Islamic past from Spanish culture. This often included intimidations and acts of intolerance against the muslims of La Moreria. When the Francoist dictatorship took power, the situation became even worse. In the second half of the century, while the rest of Europe was comforted by the end of the great catastrophe, the muslims of La Moreria were still struggling to have their existence in Madrid recognized and legitimated. While beeing tormented by those concerns, Hashim ignored future that someone else was designing for him. One night, an Iman named Ghassan came from Morocco to visit the mosque of La Moreria. As a good Muslim, Hashim hosted the foreigner Imam and welcomed him like a brother. Since the very beginning, Hashim sensed Ghassan had something evil and mysterious, but at the same time, his words were solemn and fascinating. Ghassam stood as a guest of the mosque for several months. Hashim and Ghassam conversed for whole nights about Allah, the prophets, the future of Islam. Despite Hashim´s perspicacity and intelligence, Ghassam was the one who dominated the conversations. The more Ghassam spoke with his voice full of divine grace, the more he conquered Hashim´s mind and heart. Until one night, Ghassam came up with critical arguments, an aggressive attitude Hashim would definitely never expect. Ghassam claimed Hashim´s religious practices and interpretation of the Qur'an were heretic, vile and weak. Leaving such miserable condition would require an immense act of faith from him: the abandonment of human existence. Hashim felt he was on the edge of the abyss. He felt like Abraham when God asked for Isaac's sacrifice. After sleepless nights troubled by anguish, Hashim made the decision that would change his existence, by imitating Abraham's choice. Ghassam had no clemency, but executed Hashim´s embrace untill the last step. He then introduced Hashim to unlife as the path to elevate human existence closer to Allah. Inevitably, this new condition implied accepting humans as inferior creatures. Luckily for him, Ghassam was still a religious man and not a Sabbat who praised cruelty against the mortals. He reassured Hashim that his muslim community would be protected from then on, as long as Hashim kept following Ghassan´s teachings. Hashim learned that his mentor was an Assamite of the scholars caste, called Vizier. He had come on purpose to meet Hashim, as the clan needed a representative in Madrid. Ghassan explained the existance of various clans of vampires and that these are organized as a sect called Sabbat, to which Hashim had to give unconditional loyalty.

Description
Hashim appears as an old biblical prophet carrying the weight of wisdom. He wears a dark tunic that looks like a single rag wrapping the whole body. He is often escorted by the rest of his pack, an apprentice Vizier and two warrior Assamites. Although he was embraced when he had not completed his sixty years old, he looks like an older man. His wrinkled face has a dark complexion and is covered with a thick gray beard. His serious eyes complete his character as a meditative and often taciturn man. However, if he enters into a discussion about topics he considers as relevant, he may turns into a talkative and persuasive individual. He carries a dog-eared copy of the Qur´an, handwritings of Noddist research, and a prayer rug. If he had a night off from Sect duties he looks for ancient texts that reveal new truths about Cain and Noddism, he attends the mosque, Islamic communities and its religious rites. He may be seen among the academic circles of mortals where philosophy, politics and theology are taught and debated.

Thought
As an Assamite Vizier and a Muslim, Hashim is a dual anomaly within the Sabbat. While most Noddists approach the Path of Caine throught Christian eschatology, Hashim interprets many historical facts from Islamic perspectives brings him into frequent debate with more traditional scholars. The Path of Caine is not a replacement but instead a complement of his Islamic faith. He is driven to accumulate knowledge about Nod mythology with a zeal that borders on obsessive. He finds himself caught up in the continuance of the study of lore pertaining to Caine, sometimes to the exclusion of trivial concerns such as daily shelter or nightly nourishment. He spends a lot of time hunting down source material of Noddism and also seeks out archaeological information on early vampiric civilization.

The Sabbath means to Hashim the family that the Assamites still struggle to be. As he dedicates much of his time researching on the Atnidiluvians, he´s known to be one of the most staunch supporters of the need for the Sabbat to get prepared to face the Atnidiluvians, when the time comes. He has been active and involved in cases when the Inquisition targeted heretics that denied Caine or preached against Noddism. He can sometimes be seen together with Cainites of other clans, especially among the Lasombra or wherever he thinks that important political decisions are made.

Hashim sees the Camarilla as dangerous. It manipulates the kines and deludes itself to control them. It stimulates the kines to live for vile values such as money. That has led humanity to devastating wars that were terrible for the Cainites as well. The Camarilla also allowed the Christian religious faith to become a mortal enemy of their Cainites. They don't understand that being Cainites means being closer to God. Consequently, they know nothing about how we Cainites are related to Cain. That´s why the Camarilla ignores the reality of the Antediluvians and will be totally unprepared to face them when the time comes.

Hashim also keeps contact with the mortal world, expecially with islamic leaderships, teologists, phylosophers, politicians, and other scholars of humanities. When it comes to understanding and relating to these kind of mortals, he´s among the best consultants. He often resorts to kine scholars to uncover information on philosophy, government, the arts, and religion.
He thinks the kines are spiritually far from the path of truth and still trapped in the human condition, which forces them to inferiority. However,
there are brilliant minds among them capable of contributing to phylosophy, arts and theology. Anyone of those may find the right path at some point. Above all, Hashim continues being a religious man. Mortals are creatures of Allah, capable of suffering and, for this reason, unnecessary cruelties towards them are unacceptable.
