Ss'ssarrak

Name: Ss'ssarrak

Rank: Commander

Desired Position: Captain

Age: Adult, surely.

Gender: Male, probably.

Eye colour: Gold.

Hair Colour (if applicable): It's not applicable.

Physical Description: Ss'ssarrak is a Gorn. Classically speaking, this means that he's over six feet of muscular reptile-like humanoid with a full set of claws, bronze-green scales and more teeth than the Osmond family - details which are worth bearing in mind for the remainder of his appearance, which leans more into the long, lean and graceful side of the scales as he owes more to the raptor-like ethnicities of his species than the burlier ones and accordingly manages to look more predatory than lumbering in his crisp red uniform - although Starfleet being what it is, he's still in the black/red/black 2060's pattern, unmodified by any hunting trophies, ceremonial sashes or indeed, much of anything else that would mark him as an interloper in the Starfleet command structure. Assimilation by orthodoxy, right to the tips of his neatly manicured talons.

Personality: Ss'ssarrak is, as previously noted a Gorn, which means that he's fairly even-tempered and not particularly prone to hot-blooded flare-ups of temper. The counterpart to that is that when something does manage to provoke his ire despite this, it's generally going to be pretty damn' volcanic. Beyond this, he's aware of the prejudices against his genera held by many Federation species and so makes a particular effort to represent himself - and by extension his kind - as educated, reasonable and refined. Sometimes, he even succeeds.

Bio/History: When Leonard 'Bones' McCoy delivered eight premature Gorn to the mate of the Hegemony Ambassador early in his career he had little idea how far his actions would reverberate down through history. It's considered traditional for Gorn to relate closely to the world of their birth and so all of the offspring subsequently went into diplomatic and economic careers that would tie them more closely to Earth than to Tau Lacertae IX. Ss'ssarrak is the eldest son of the eldest daughter of that group of Gorn, and so naturally applied to a military liaison post with Starfleet as soon as he'd completed his Hegemony-mandated term of service.

The Gorn were studiously neutral during the Dominion War, but with a flavour of 'neutral' that meant that the Federation could maintain an almost completely demilitarised border with them, as well as one that saw significant shipments of munitions and raw materials being sent to Federation shipyards. During this time, Ss'ssarrak was posted to one of the small number of escort ships that operated along the border in order to dissuade Orion raiders, racking up a modest reputation for competent service and, in due course earning promotion to Lieutenant, and then Lieutenant Commander through the course of the war.

In its aftermath, with the attendant drawing-down of forces a number of previously ranking officers find themselves lacking command positions, but politically it would be disadvantageous to remove the grandson of the ambassador of a close ally... And there's the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk, in need of a technically qualified captain and... Square peg, meet rhomboidal hole!

Anything else we should know about your character?: Technically, he holds a dual commission in the Hegemony Navy, entitling him to wear a sword on duty.

While in the Academy he allegedly slept with the daughter of the Caitian JAG Admiral in the Kobayashi Maru simulation chamber after hours, on the basis that regulations or no, this definitely constituted 'a win'.

Because small, portable and cultured hobbies are considered appropriate for Starfleet officers, Ss'ssarrak collects and paints historical miniatures. He cordially hates doing so, but it's expected and he missed his chance at joining one of the more interesting societies at the Academy.
