The Things We Do In The Dark

The nation of Galt is a story in high ideals...and tragic failure. Since the Red Revolution some fifty years prior, its government has been in a constant state of upheaval and chaos, revolutions coming so quickly that it seems as though no government can stay in place for more than a bare handful of years before its leaders are being executed in turn, and the next takes the stage.

Known since antiquity as a haven of free-thinkers, philosophers, and artists, it has fallen sadly short of the ideals it was established on in the wake of the revolution from Chelaxian rule. Much of the populace lives in fear, the leaders are nothing more than demagogues, and many of the essential functions of government are left undone. Bandits roam the countryside largely unhindered by what remains of the military, the once-beautiful cities are falling into ruin, and disease is rampant.

In all of this, perhaps the one constant has been the Gray Gardeners. This order of executioners, all anonymous, have watched from their monastery in the city of Litran as one government after another has fallen. Each is the custodian of a final blade, one of the terrifying guillotines constructed shortly after the Revolution by unknown methods. Each blade is capable of holding the souls of those it executes, making them frighteningly effective ways of removing someone from the world entirely.

You came to Galt hoping to stabilize the nation and bring lasting peace to it. But as you have learned, the Gray Gardeners are the primary obstacle to this. They have contacts everywhere, and indeed may be the true rulers of the nation, but they also have a strong incentive to keep the bloody revolt going. Due to their anonymity, however, it will be difficult to find any real information about them - and you may have to break into their monastery in order to actually learn what their goals are, and how to fix the situation.
