Akari and Ryuichi were both run of the mill, average ordinary office workers working for video game giant Tellus Electronics. Both worked as associates in the Coding Department. That is where they met. Akari was a talented programmer and there wasn't anything she couldn't turn out, but her direct supervisor routinely took credit for her work. Ryuichi eventually became upset at this and confronted him. He was immediately fired, but the situation turned horrific at that moment. As the supervisor gloated over firing Ryuichi he began to transform into a monster, something deformed and horrifying. It killed Ryuichi, throwing his body into the mainframe, and Akari awakened. Screaming she couldn't move at the monster advanced on her, but suddenly she felt a warm light around her, and she was suddenly on the street in front of the building. Hands helped her up although she was still hysterical, and guided her away as strange, almost metallic, men rushed inside. The last thing Akari remembers as they loaded her into a black SUV was the top of the Tellus building exploding.

She was taken in by (Iteration X) and helped to recover. She was trained and learned about what had happened. She also realized that her husband spoke to her through the laptop she had bought with the insurance money. She did keep that to herself, however. She got her hands on parts from a MarkIV and began to assemble what will eventually be a new body for her husband to inhabit instead of her computer. They tried to transfer him into her car but only succeeded in somehow awakening the vehicle and creating a self-aware AI. It was a very new InnoVAtioN, so she named it IVAN, for short.

Eventually she was transferred to the US and assigned to the Presidio construct where she met and worked with the others.
