Valen is a young squire of fifteen winters. He stands at five feet and seven inches tall and weighs just shy of nine stone. The lad has a very muscular build for one so young, which is due to his constant training with sword and spear under the keen eye of Ser Berion, his hero. Valen's sandy blonde hair is cropped short to better fit under a helm, and his golden eyes can be both bright and intense.

Valen is both rigid and pensive, as well quiet when at court, especially around Lady Gwen. Though  he is more robust, friendly, and competitive around the squires. He is known to be both pious and stubborn. The former he holds that all true knight should be, and the latter has won him more than one sparring match as he wears his opponent down. As a devoted young man and being of the lower House of Vance, young Valen is close to and liked by his young cousin Kendred, the current lord of House Vance of Atranta.

As a squire to Ser Berion, Valen is equally devoted. The knight is the boy's hero. As his liege was knighted at the young age of sixteen, Valen expects to be. He holds great pride in his house's warrior history, and hopes to live up to it as a faithful and good sword to either Knollwood, House Blackfin, or return home and serve his cousin. He greatly respects Ser Thoren, Ser Donwald, Ser Darvil, and Lord Thaddeus.
