The Black Company -- The Beryl ContractHot summer has come to Beryl, brightest and wealthiest of the Jewel Cities that ring the shores of the Sea of Torments. Insurrection and rebellion have been brewing for years now under the repressive rule of the current Syndic, but rather than mend his ways and seek compromise with his subjects, the cruel overlord has sent for a legendary military force to crush the last remaining spark of revolt from the citizens.
The Black Company has also fallen on hard times. Years of warfare in the south lands have taken their toll. The Companys ranks are much diminished. And last year their employer absconded with his treasury without paying them their wages. Desperate to recoup their losses and rest up for a season or two, the Captain has accepted the Syndics contract in good part because he has paid in advance.
Many of the old hands feel it is beneath the dignity of named warriors to play the part of policemen, and a steady stream of desertions along the march north has thinned the ranks even further. Perhaps it is what the Captain intended? Green recruits are paid much less than grizzled veterans.
Our game begins in the days immediately after the Black Company has arrived in Beryl and taken up their quarters inside the Old City walls. Recruitment posters have been pasted on doors and walls all over the city.
