Declan Farlas

Declan Farlas is not from Gloomhaven, nor is he even from any city in the surrounding countryside itself. In point of fact, he is a child of a large metropolis, which might normally look down places like this that he currently finds himself in. Not that such things matter to the young man. Declan grew up in the lap of luxury, the youngest son of the prestigious and large House Farlas. Always a romantic soul, he was fascinated with poetry as a child, often encouraged by his doting mother. Even to this day he will recite and compose poetry in his downtime. But the life of a poet was not path his father wished for him. When he was old enough, he was sent to a famous preparatory academy "to become a man." And while he excelled at his studies, even going so far as to be one of their finest students of the blade, he never lost his carefree or libertine spirit. To the point that he was almost expelled from the academy several times for several colorful incidents, only saved by his family name.

Upon graduation, he gave serious though to continuing his education by joining an officers school and then joining the ongoing war as a commissioned officer. However, Declan's father already had two sons in the army, and had different plans for his youngest son. Namely that of an advantageous political marriage. Angered that he was unable to choose his own career, and resenting his father's machinations, Declan conspired with his mother to try to get him far from his father lest they come to blows. They managed to convince his father to send Declan on an extended one or two year holiday to "sow his wild oats."

While he dreads the day that he returns home, Declan has decided to make the most of his brief freedom. He has slowly been making his way through the major cities of region, sampling their hedonistic pleasures. Eventually his path took him to Gloomhaven, which was quite far from his home. But the idea of putting an entire country between his father and himself appealed to Declan's petty side. Besides, carousing with citizens of a town that would be seen as lesser in high society was just the kind of mild scandal that he liked to tweak his father's nose with. But such a lifestyle requires funds, and his father cut him off from any sort of stipend months ago. As such, Declan has been making money utilizing his most marketable skill: his sword-craft. Serving as a judicial champion, a dueling champion, or even a simple mercenary, might not be glamorous, but for those willing to get their hands dirty, they can make a fine pile of coin. And seeing as he ran out some time ago, Declan is desperate for a paying job at the moment...
