Deadlands Classic: In the Shadow of the Tower

Hello and welcome to Horror at Headstone Hill, a weird west campaign set in the town of Heaston Hill in Uinta County, Wyoming Country. In this campaign scenario, player characters have been brought together by a shadowy organization of monster-hunters to investigate into the unusual happenings in Heaston Hill.

May, 1884.

A heap of trouble's brewing Out West in Uinta ("you-IN-teh") County. Folks have been going missing in the vast aspen forests near Heaston Hill, and now even the US Agent sent to investigate has vanished without a word.

A shadowy organization called the Twilight Legion had put together a posse to sort things out. (That's you.)

Uinta County

Uinta County was formed in 1869, one of five counties in Wyoming Territory. It stretches north all the way to Montana and encompasses all of Yellowstone, the world's first national park. Its name comes from the Ute word Yoov-we-teuh, meaning "pine forest."

Uinta is wild Wyoming mountain country, most of it at least a mile above sea level. The county's geography is defined by two river valleys--Bear River in the west and Black's Fork of the Green River in the east--and the mountain range that splits them roughly down the center, known locally as the Divide. The climate is generally more arid in the east, tending toward alpine to the west. Winters are brutally cold.

Uinta's residents are mostly miners, loggers, trappers, and Denver-Pacific railroad employees, but ranchers and farmers are a growing presence. Eastern Shoshone, Bannock, and Ute Indian bands migrate through the region seasonally, but those who follow the Old Ways almost always winter in the Sioux Nations.

The Headstone Nugget

One recent event was significant enough to alter the county's path for the foreseeable future: the discovery of the Headstone Nugget.

In January 1883, a down-on-his-luck prospector named William Phoenix dug a 66.6-pound ghost rock nugget from the Uinta foothills. Before you could say "ghost rock fever" there were more miners than you could shake a stick at all over the bluff, known locally as Tarrytown Bench.

Following the independent miners, the Heaston Mining Company with its deep pockets and extensive water-flume extraction systems. Owner Jerem Heaston brought the town of Heaston Hill numerous improvements--including electric lights on Main Street--but there's been a persistent and troubling pattern of conflict between Heaston's employees and local miners. And by most accounts it's getting worse.

Most folks in town know the history of the Headstone Nugget, but everyone knows it recently went missing! And rumors are flying about who might have taken it...

Twilight Legion

Your hero is one of the few who knows monsters and magic are real, having survived to tell the tale and been inducted into a secret organization of monster hunters called the Twilight Legion.

Members of the Legion have developed a few unobtrusive ways to identify one another and maintain secrecy.

The public face of the Twilight Legion is the Explorer's Society, a "gentleperson's" club dedicated to exploration and the cataloging of flora, fauna, customs, and peoples.

Most members of the Explorer's Society aren't members of the Twilight Legion, but most members of the Legion are Explorers, and can call others of the organization when needed.
