[DnD 3.5] The Divine Contest

Whomever you were before today, it does not matter now. Whatever history, plans, or people were known to you on Toril before today pale in comparison to what has been thrust upon you. Quite without warning, you suddenly find yourself standing in a great arena, which appears to be floating freely through the Sea of Night. Looming before you in a throne that would dwarf the defensive walls of some major cities sits a mysterious figure that towers more than five times the height of a man. Their features are completely obscured by a golden veil that flows over their form like a living mercury. Whether they identify as male or female isn't even known, as even their voice is simply an intruding thought within your own mind, which is heard in your own voice.

They bid you welcome to the Grand Lyceum. You, out of all the mortal souls of your realm, have been chosen to take part in an unprecedented event. There has come a vacancy in the great pantheon that guides all of creation. While such events have happened before, normally there was another god to take over their duties, or some ascendant mortal to fulfill the role. But such is not the case this time. The One Who Is Hidden has decreed that their shall be a Divine Contest to determine who shall next wear the mantle of a god. As a god will need to protect their power and portfolio from all who would threaten it, one who not only has experience wielding power, but the will to fight and die, is needed. Thus you have been chosen to take part in a tournament to determine who amongst you is the strongest and most worthy of this spark of divinity. You shall be paired off into individual duels, each battle held at the heart of the Grand Lyceum, and those that emerge victorious shall fight the victors of the other contests. Until only one stands.

And if the golden one, who calls itself Summa Rudis, decides the contest has been beaten according to the rules laid down, then the champion will immediately ascend and join the ranks of the gods and assume their new duties. Summa Rudis is quick to inform you that your wants and desires have no place here. You were chosen for your strength and character. The only way to leave this place is to take on the power of those Above, or to be defeated and be cast back from whence you came.

Rejoice! For soon, a new god will be chosen from your ranks! May the fates be with you...
