Dark Awakening - ADnD 1st Edition based rules

The village was swallowed up by darkness. Just the temple and a bare quarter of the place were still in the light but things ventured out at night. Hunting. Feasting.

The wise one of the village foresaw this and worked with the local alchemists to device a defense against the magic run amok. They developed a formula that they fed volunteers to make them super soldiers.

Things didn't go according to plan. The curse of darkness was more potent than first thought and corrupted the process, leaving them with supermen with no memories or direction. Thankfully, one of them rose and gathered the few survivors of the experiment and destroyed the evil mages and their spells.

Both warring governments collapsed. The region spun in to chaos for years but the leader, a man named Lord Oliver, soldiered on. He gathered his few surviving superhuman fellows and worked together, uniting the warring nations then eliminating the ever-present orcish menace to the east and annexing three small nations to form the Republic of Westerly. Oliver was the first president and left office as a man of 70 years, having built a strong army, fair laws, a system of trade and transport, an even-handed system of taxation and most of all, representative government.

It was an odd idea from his second wife, Gladys, who ran a magic school and taught her revolutionary ideas to her students.

The years slipped by and Oliver and his family mostly stay on his estate these days, enjoying growing things and watching their mob of grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up. But there is a shadow in the east. Portents point towards foul things happening and soon. This new threat must be dealt with quickly! Oliver, even in his advanced years, will not allow the Dark to return...
