The Forsaken Regiment

The Fourth Solar Legion of Taldor was one of the units that formed the backbone of the Shining Crusade against Tar-Baphon, back in days long gone by. They took horrendous losses, and by the end of the crusade, the Sixth Regiment was the only unit of the legion left, the others having been wiped out to a man.

The remaining legionnaires took up arms in defense of the newly-founded nation of Lastwall, swearing that they would not rest until they had rejoined their comrades in death. And they did, but before they fell, they created a tradition, a touchstone. Now called the Forsaken Regiment, they would take nearly anyone who wanted to join them. But there were consequences.

Those who join swear a solemn oath to stand against the dead and all those that threaten the security of the Whispering Tyrant's prison until they pass from this world in honorable battle. Their funerals are held with them in attendance, and from that moment on, they are legally considered to have died an honorable death. Whatever stains are on their honor, whatever crimes they have committed, are forgiven.

So respected is the Regiment that even other nations hold them in high esteem - because whatever else you can say about someone who joins the Forsaken, no one can call them coward. It's not unheard of for someone to make their way to Lastwall with the specific intention of joining for the redemption they offer, and several nations give it the same legal weight as their final home will.

Within Lastwall, they do not pay for basic necessities or even many luxuries. Food, drink, lodging...these things are simply provided for them. Outside of Lastwall, those who bear the Forsaken Regiment's tattoo on their face are usually seen as deserters, and they are seldom met kindly. After all, they not only did something heinous enough to justify joining, but they then abandoned their duty, their very last chance at redemption.

For whatever reason, you are in Lastwall to sign on with the Regiment. They don't ask why you want to sign on for this final fight. No one ever does. It's enough that you are willing.
