Scarlet Ambitions

Amn. 1383 DR
The Year of Unjust Rewards, Era of Upheaval

The nation of Amn has been blessed with peace and prosperity for over 700 years, a period during which the rulers traded for the wealth of the far north and shipped valuable spice and exotic goods from the western lands. Money became the centre of every good Amnian citizen's world, and the nation's taste for accumulating wealth corrupted many of the mercantile classes.

Athkatla, also known as the City of Coin, is the capital and oldest settlement of the mercantile nation of Amn. The city buzzes with peddlers and hustlers, hard-haggling merchants who are as competitive as they are ruthless in their pursuit of coin. The city offers a stark contrast between those who hold power (money), and those who do not. Organizations that run the city's economy, such as the oppressive Cowled Wizards, the enigmatic Shadow Thieves guild or obscenely wealthy mercantile houses act with complete authority and near impunity. For the weak and the poor in the slums of the River District, life in the city is an overwhelming affair where danger looms at nearly every turn.

Athkatla is possibly the wealthiest city in all Faerun, where nearly every aspect of life revolves around money and commerce. Anything can be bought, for a price, and trade is openly conducted for goods illegal in other nations. From weapons and armor to drugs and slaves, everything and anything can be bought in the markets on Waukeen's Promenade. The concept of affluence is so well-connected with Athkatla there are even rumours in foreign lands that the city's streets are paved with gold.

Where better for a band of young adventurers to begin their pursuits of power, prestige and wealth?
