An Incident at Bendix Falls

Deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, coal miners have discovered an eerie set of crystalline caverns filled with ancient Indian remains. Unsettling noises from the mine and the sudden disappearance of several of the miners have rattled the inhabitants of Bendix Palls, Pennsylvania, and the remaining men have downed tools and refused to work in the mine until the caverns are explored and explained by a "proper scientific investigation."

William Bendix, owner of the mine, most of the town and over half of the steep-sided valley, has come to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia insisting they provide the investigation the men are demanding.

"Time is money," insists the very abrupt Bendix, and he wants a crew put together immediately.

"We'll beat those Commies at their own game," he declares. Bendix believes the concerted action has been caused by Union agitators. He has a contract with the War Department to provide hard, hot-burning anthracite coal to fuel the many ships and locomotives that support the Navy and the Army. As a military contractor, his operation is protected from strikes. He firmly insists the UMW has come up with this scheme to thwart the law.

"Get your boffins down my mine by the end of the week, provost, and get my scientific report done quickly. I have influence over your funding, as you know."
