Welcome to Queen's Got Your Number - Call of Cthulhu in Harlem

02:59, 4th May 2024 (GMT+0)

Corrine (Cora) Houston

An attractive young woman, too dark skinned to pass, but  determined to prove that Black is Beautiful. She dresses stylishly, in what she can afford. She works for a Black owned newspaper and enjoys going to the many  music clubs in the Heights. She lives in the heart of Sugar Hill, just north of the City College.

Cora is a deeply spiritual person with a solid upbringing in the Baptists Church. She goes to church on Sunday (St. John's) and prays on her knees every night before bed. In recent years she has started to gain an interest in the Voodoo churches of the Caribbean Islands that she has found in Harlem. She has started to collect folklore about these religious practices and correlate the worship she grew up with other more directly African sources of worship

She wrote for the school newspaper in college at Brown, and did well publishing little slice-of-life observation pieces. She also started publishing detective stories in which the hero is a black police detective in Baltimore who shoots it out regularly with bad guys who are never quite depicted as white. She makes a small but steady income off of these "pulp" stories while trying to write serious literature about the quickening of a new culture in Harlem. She also writes very dark poetry, almost none of which she has submitted for publication. She does not drink, believing in the mission of temperance, but she will smoke MJ -- something that never got no one killed for being bull headed stupid!
