Overland to Kathmandu

From the mid-1950s to the late 1970s, many thousands of Westerners engaged in an epic overland journey from Western Europe to South Asia, seeking to experience different cultures, meet different people and if we're being truly honest, smoke some high-quality cannabis. Known as the "hippie trail" to outsiders, mainly because that was the main demographic that used it, this route through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India became famous.

Some drove in vehicles like the Volkswagen Kombi mini-van. Others took trains or buses. Still others hitched a lift. Flying was generally avoided. They ate the local food, got to know the local people in a way most tourists do not and generally had an epic adventure they would remember for the rest of their days. The route was not without its risks - the possibility of serious illness, robbery and accidents was real - but that did put these adventurers off.

So, grab your backpack and your kaftan, then join me on a trip back to 1972, to a very different world.
