Assault On Aincrad
Game Info
In 2022, a virtual reality massively multiplayer online role-playing game (VRMMORPG) called Sword Art Online (SAO) is released. With the NerveGear, a helmet that stimulates the user's five senses via their brain, players can experience and control their in-game characters with their minds. Both the game and the NerveGear were created by Akihiko Kayaba, a man of genius level intellect.
On launch day, 10,000 players logged into SAO's mainframe cyberspace for the first time, only to discover that they were unable to log out. Kayaba appeared and told the players that they must beat all 100 floors of Aincrad, a steel castle which is the setting of SAO, if they wish to be free. He also stated that those who suffer in-game deaths or have the NerveGear forcibly removed out-of-game will suffer real-life death which, in turn, caused widespread panic among the game's 10,000 players.
This game will start near the beginning, just a couple months after the launch day. Characters from the show and light novels will not be present, so we can avoid continuity errors. I have labeled this game as Semi-Freeform because there are some stats and skills that I will be keeping track of. That said, there are no dice rolls, number crunching or any extensive list of system rules that the players must adhere to. Rather, I and any future GM(s) will take care of that aspect of the game behind the scenes while the players focus on their writing, in hopes of making the game progress as fluidly as possible.
Although the general aesthetic and setup of this game is based heavily on Sword Art Online (the anime), I have made several tweaks and have borrowed ideas from other works of fiction such as Log Horizon, Infinite Dendrogram, Grimgar Of Fantasy And Ash, Goblin Slayer, Danmachi, Bofuri and quite a few other animes, as well as modern day mmorpg's for inspiration in quests, characters and even game mechanics. The game will have plenty of similarities to the original, but also plenty of new content to keep things interesting and, hopefully, more fun overall. Some new aspects include Mounts, Player Titles, Magic, Dynamic Quests, Dynamic NPC's, NPC Companions, wild monster taming, several new playable races, many new ideas for the 100 floors and a PVP arena where 1 on 1 duels and even Guild Wars will be hosted. I've included a lot of these things to give the game that mmorpg feel that SAO never really had- at least in my opinion.
