Where Light Burns Brightest

This game takes place in the city of New Sothis. Built on the outskirts of, and taking up the southern districts of, the Osirian capital of Sothis, it's a ghetto of sorts for those who are afflicted by the supernatural condition known locally as the chills, the wasting, or simply "the sickness" among those who prefer not to reference its actual name of Gar-Sekal's Sickness (named for the first physician to report it).

The history of Gar-Sekal's is a recent one. Slightly over seven years ago, people in the southern districts of Sothis began to experience strange corrupting symptoms of both the body and mind - whether that be strange growths, mutations, or behavioral abnormalities. The thing that identified them as a common illness was a mixture of traits. They are highly resistant to treatment, with spells such as cure disease or even the most potent of heal spells doing little to nothing - some even found that their condition worsened after such spells. The condition was progressive, as well, and symptoms never simply stopped; all who were affected developed increasingly severe symptoms until eventually they either died or were unrecognizable, usually violent, husks of themselves. In time, it became known that the condition was actually caused by excessive amounts of positive energy, and that it was incurable once symptoms developed.

Sothis was wounded, but it moved on. A separate walled-off city was built taking up the worst-hit districts and an expanse of desert outside of them, and those affected were forcibly relocated to this new community. There were bloody riots, especially as it became clear that those who had been moved were not allowed back out - period.

But in time, it moved on. Armed guards were posted at the walls to keep the afflicted within the ghetto city of New Sothis, which was otherwise left to govern itself, food being dropped in over the walls. While the worst of the violence is in the past, the solution is still deeply controversial. People outside are still occasionally affected by the condition, and are summarily relocated. Most go willingly, understanding that this is a compromise with those who would otherwise euthanize them before they could become a menace as their minds deteriorated. The appearance of the sickness is most common in Sothis and the surrounding area, but has been seen throughout Osirion and it's neighboring nations.

Now, having started to show symptoms of Gar-Sekal's, you have been gathered up and moved to the lift that descends each day with food to join the inhabitants of New Sothis.
