Koen is a short, lithe man but his body has clearly seen exercise and physical training. He has a tinted skin, possibly moroccan decent, with brown eyes and a short but carefully trimmed beard. He wears cargo pants and loose shirts, though casual, each is immaculately kept. His overall appearance is one of tidy casualness. His gait is peculiar; although fully mobile, he leans on his left leg, and when possible he uses a light cane to assist himself when walking.
Koen was born in Delft, Netherlands on September 27, 1988. His father was a manuscript curator at a local museum while his mother was a journalist. He has four sisters and two brothers. His second oldest sister is a prominent professor of mathematics at the University of Groningen. From 2006 to 2012, Koen attended the University of Twente where he graduated with a degree in electronics engineering and computer science, where he graduated with honours.
Having second thoughts over his career choices, he decided to join the army, where he soon joined the ISTAR Commando, 107, Aerial recognisance. A year later he was sent to Mali as part of MINUSMA. Near the end of this tour, his car is hit by a road-side IED. Although he survives, he does lose the lower half of his right leg. Discharged due to his injury, he is contacted by the AIVD after his recovery. There he joins their digital systems infiltration unit.
