GURPS - Reclaimers
It would be unfair to say that human life on Earth "ended", uncounted numbers still live there despite despite everything that's happened.There was also no one event or problem that society can really point to. Sure, your average person might try to sum it up as "Climate Change", "War" or "Disease", but it would take a dedicated scholar to really break down all the disparate elements that led to the events of the 21rst century. Much like the events of the previous era, most people were far more concerned with solving the pressing problems of the day than with documenting the times they were living in.
What most people commonly accept is that what was left of Humanity gradually spread out into the rest of the solar system as the situation on Earth became more dire. At the time most of the space craft, off world facilities and the logistics chains to support those industries belonged to private corporations, and that by and large they retain those possessions to this day.
But humans were never meant to live on Luna, or Mars, or the in Lagrange Points. Not in private stations, not in the Trojans. Uncounted years of evolution specialized them to their native environment, and as the years go on, many people express a desire to return to their home world.
The sad fact is that the vast majority of people are no longer suited to any kind of difficult task at all. Most humans in developed countries were widely considered to be "soft" even when they still resided on earth, and the last three generations off world have only exacerbated the problem.
The majority of the species live in conditions that their ancestors would have considered bizarre, a sad existence, a lonely and largely pointless existence of toil, consumption and existential misery.
But you are not in the majority, you are a Reclaimer. Much as the term "Homesteader" once denoted a person with interests or skills that allowed them to live "off grid", you are a person that is intelligent enough, fit enough, and bold enough to seriously consider what most people never would. To achieve what most people could never hope to achieve.
To return to Earth.
Gone are the days of wealthy nations assembling teams of renowned experts. Now prospective Colonists pay for the privilege of attending specialized education, and then pay again for the mere chance of securing a berth on the rare colony ships that ferry those intrepid souls to Earth.
