Ben was the leader of McNeill's Rangers, a small force of roughly 200 men that used guerilla tactics to wreak havoc on Union operations in Western Virginia.  When the war was over he headed further West living by the law of the Gun.

Wanting to settle in one place he became one of Bosch's Henchmen who ran the Saloon and watched over the working girls there as their protector and friend.  Sometimes he dared to argue sense with Bosch and is a great mediator.

Ben is a fast gun, having made his living with his guns after the war.  Some things he can't tolerate being a true Southerner but he likes his life in Laredo and only uses his guns when he has to.  He is a brawler and few can stand toe to toe with him in a fist fight.

Despite all of this he is a caring soul deep down.
