Matt is a quiet man.  Most probably because he has seen his fill of battles and death.  A retired Colonel from the US Army, before that a Confederate Colonel in the Civil War.

Originally from South Carolina where he owned a plantation.  Sure he had slaves, but they were treated as men and women.  When the war had ended and he lost his wife to Typhoid, he had enough.  Too many memories.  He divided up his land between his freed slaves to build homes and a life for themselves.  He set fire to his home and took but a few things and his money and headed West.

He stopped off in Laredo and liked the place.  Before Bosch came that is.  He had stayed at Addie’s Boarding House and took a liking to her.  They fell in love.  He bought land and built a fine Livery Stable called Laredo Livery which is the hub for the Butterfield Stage and Haulage.

He took a liking in a fatherly manner to the young woman, Calamity Jayne Elder.  He and Addie became like parents to her.

Matt has sat back and watched Bosch weasel his way into Mayor and then things started to happen.  No proof but he was sure Bosch was trying to carve out an empire at the expense of the folks around Laredo!
