COURT OF STARS

A Medieval Dark Fantasy

From Earth, seven stars are visible: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. These heavenly bodies chart the fate of mortals on Earth, informing all things. From medicine to temperament, to love. The Madonna used this knowledge to ascend. With Her newfound power, She established the 7 Houses of Nymphaea and led the city into an age of prosperity. But mortal constructs never last. The city's bones run deep. Civilizations built upon civilizations, rising and falling in an endless cycle. The stars are aligning, and an abyssal sea slowly encroaches on the city’s shores. It brings with it a terrible curse. If the Houses can not keep the sea at bay, surely it will devour them. If they don't devour each other first.

Court of Stars is a dark fantasy of manners. You will play out the tales of knights, ladies, peasants, and heretics all navigating a city afflicted with a terrible curse. Scheming nobles, corrupted clergymen, and a battlefield of courtly drama threaten to unravel the very fabric of the city. Explore a medieval world where the line between history and myth is thin. Where magic is strange and often cruel. Find yourself embroiled in love triangles, vie for power, or decipher the mystery of the Flood and its curse.

While this game is mostly freeform, rolling 2d6 will determine success and failure for harder tasks. Roleplay always takes priority over rolls. They exist simply to give players narrative consequences for their actions, and to generate organic prompts. The setting has more in common with medieval poems than with Tolkien. Everyone plays squishy, flawed mortals forced to contend with strange magic and authorities that do not have your best interests at heart. Sometimes you will face the supernatural, but more often, you will be at odds with your peers and neighbors. Although there are monsters lurking in the deep, one resides in every man's heart. As a Fantasy of Manners, much of the horror and dark comedy will be provoked by the absurdity of your society; a medieval Kafkaesque gangland where powerful syndicates use you as their chess pieces.
