Sir John Gates Hobbs Jr is the grandson of Jack Hobbs the nineteenth century Cricketer who more or less invented the professional game.  Sir John does not take after his father (a stockbroker) nor his grandfather.  He is more of an expert than a mage, but with great learning comes some degree of skill.
