Several years ago a bard traveling the planes visited the Court of Ice and Steel where he met a Djinn maiden serving as a royal guard. Fascinated by Aurora's beauty and mercurial nature, Devon spent years courting her with song and gifts until finally earning her love. The affection of a Djinn can be intense and Devon was not capable of keeping up with the whirlwind relationship and ultimately abandoned Aurora out of frustration, but not before leaving her with child. Knowing nothing of parenthood, and bound to the service of the Great Caliph, Aurora left young Thalia with her mentor Lord Kareem who had studied with and trained many mortals. A master of the arts sought after from across the planes 'Uncle Kareem' adopted the young Thalia as one of his students, uncertain how else to manage a child.  As Thalia grew so did her resentment for her own mortal heritage in part because of how Devon seduced her mother only to abandon them both. On her 18th birthday, Uncle Kareem offered to turn her into a full Djinn, but only after she had spent twenty years as a mortal seeking adventure and accomplishment; only then would she know herself enough to make such a decision. Eager to start the adventure (and the clock), Thalia found her way to the prime material plane through a portal and picked a direction to walk towards.
