Calix Slade

Name: Calix Slade
Nickname (if any): Cal
Age:  28
Theme Song: I am a Stone
Class: Illicit, but before that, he was an Illustrian.
Position in Game: Contestant
Character Visual:  Alex Pettyfer
Appearance/Distinguishing Features:  The name Calix Slade is well-known in some of Valport's inner circles. When mentioned, it is often associated with a smooth-shaven young man who often wore a cocky smile with bright, mischievous eyes. In fact, his face was on not one but two of Valport's most popular magazines, and one of those covers portrayed him as such. The second time was not his portrait in a white lab coat standing in front of Valport's top hospital. It was of him with numbers on his chest and a grim expression.

Two years in prison changes a person. His angular jaw is no longer smoothly shaven but often covered in thick, dark hair. Adolescent success is no longer displayed in his dark, sea-green eyes. Instead, the skin beneath is dark and reveals a lack of sleep. His forehead, sometimes covered by his over-grown, dirty blonde locks, is slightly wrinkled from hours of concentration during isolation.

Even his stature has changed. He is no longer thin and wiry from hours pouring over medical books and focusing on his position. Instead, his upper body has changed, revealing he spent time working out while he was locked behind bars. The food that was given was just enough to survive on. Because of his crimes, he could never indulge in the sweets they sometimes received around the holidays.

Scars pepper parts of his body. He has one that lies beneath the stumble on his jaw and one that runs down his side and along his hip bone. The penitentiary in Valport could be brutal at times - especially for those who committed crimes against the country.

Personality: Calix was never a defiant individual - he was a free thinker which, for countries like Valport, is even worse. Every child goes through a stage where they ask why, but it was one of Calix's favorites, and he never wanted a simple answer. When he was not satisfied with what his parents or instructors said, he would research on his own and find a solution or come to his own conclusion. This never changed even as he got older.

It was one reason he decided to go into medicine. He wanted to know more about the human body and how it worked, which led him to one of the most intricate parts - the human heart. He loved and still does to learn, but the more he rose in his profession, the closer he got to higher officials in Valport, the fewer answers he got to questions, and it caused doubt regarding the state of their country. This personality quirk would eventually lead to his arrest.

Before his arrest, he was a talker. He could start a conversation with anyone and carry it for hours, and people loved him for it. He did not just talk, but he listened attentively, and he had a way of easing other individuals' fears or concerns; this helped his patients when he talked to them about their treatment.

Unfortunately, two years isolated in a prison cell can hinder an individual's ability to interact and communicate. He has no idea of the latest technology or significant events in their society over the last two years because the Vanguard did not take it among themselves to inform those in his ward.

The idea of going back into society is more overwhelming than the Trials he will eventually have to face.

Occupation: Cardiothoracic Surgeon. Well, that was before he was a prisoner.

Special Talents:  He is familiar with most areas of medicine, but he excelled in surgical procedures. His steady hands and exceptional talent for concentrating made him a prime candidate. He used his talents to climb quickly in the ranks and, before he was arrested for treason, was one of the most well-paid and sought surgeons in all Valport.

History: Some Illustrians have families that are well-known across the board. This is because they are bred to be something great. Calix was not. His father did not strive to be someone that would go down in the history books or rise in the Illustrian ranks to become the best of the best. He was bred into the class and simply wanted to exist with his wife who, unlike most Illustrian couples, he actually loved.  They both desired to have children, and, two years later, Calix was born - a happy and healthy baby.

In stories, by now, there would be a tragic accident of some sort, but that was not in the cards for the Slade family. Instead, they existed together and lived their lives. Day in and day out, they worked their jobs, raised their son, and spent time putting puzzles together (electronics were not a focus in their home).  Calix worked hard in school and loved to learn. He was an outcast in his middle and teenage years because he preferred to study rather than fall into the drama that circulated through the Illustrian schools.

He excelled in everything and was at the top of his class in school, but his desire to learn would eventually cost him everything. The older he got, the more some of his lessons did not make sense, and he began to ask questions. Quickly, he father informed him that there were some things he could not talk to his teachers about, but they tried to give him the resources he needed to find them - it just had to be done discreetly.

He graduated a year before his peers, and because of his skill in the sciences, he was admitted to one of Valport's top medical programs, and once again, he excelled.  He was a little more lenient with his time in his college years and spent more time socializing than he had in his adolescence - balancing it well.

Eventually, he graduated with top honors from medical school and began his journey to become a surgeon, which he accomplished at 24. Two years after he became Valport's most desired surgeon in the country, a position he never fought for or went after with intention. He continued to question and search for answers. Still, it wasn't until he began visiting the Slums of Valport to provide humanitarian medical aid that things made sense.

He met a member of the resistance, began to learn the truth, and continued to aid those less fortunate than the Illustrians in their country by smuggling medical supplies across the borders of Valport. Everything was running smoothly until one day, it wasn't.

Calix Slade, Valports most promising surgeon, was arrested for treason against the President and Country.  His trial was swift, and the deliberation even swifter - he was found guilty and expected death to come sooner rather than later.

Two years later, he is being removed from his prison cell...
