The Fruition Trials

The Fruition Trials all started when the unrest began to ripple through the lower class that made up the foundation of Valport. The upper class was better cared for – more money, more food, better healthcare, and quality of life. They grew tired of early deaths due to preventable sickness and starvation. In short, they desired better, as they should. The President’s council met to create a plan to appease the Ignoble class, but this council was made primarily of Illustrians (upperclassmen) who did not want to hand over their silver spoons.

This spurred the creation of the Fruition Trials. Those who wanted more – money, recognition – could apply and, if selected, go through numerous tests, training, and eventually a televised event that the whole country could watch. Initially, contestant went against contestant, but instead of appeasing the masses, it caused more division. So, once again, changes had to occur to settle the unrest.

Instead of against one another, the council decided that the contestants would work together instead of against each other. They hoped this would build camaraderie between the classes and ease the division – succeeding depended on how well they worked together. An ideal that those in charge hoped would seep into all areas of their country.

The success of the Trials ran rampant throughout the country. Every win was celebrated and every death brought in more viewers. However, as time progressed, the trials became riskier, more life-threatening, and more deaths started to occur. Because of this, fewer Prominents and Illustrians risked their lives, but the Ignobles continued because it meant money for their families and the possibility of fame. Now, most contestants are lower-classmen, hoping to get out of the slums and build a better life for themselves and their families.

Over the years, some have begun to suspect that the Trials are not as randomly generated as those in charge want the populace to believe.

Most of the citizens of Valport are eager for the next Trials to begin. Rumor has it that it will be the best one yet.

The citizens of Valport are not the only ones watching. The growing Resistance is too.
