Flying Swordsmen: End of the Chen Dynasty

It is a time of turmoil and strife. In the great Empire of Zhongyang Dalu, the fragile stability is under threat. Still in the throes of a series of crippling rebellions, the ailing Chen dynasty struggles to hold the Empire together.

Now, old Emperor Ping has died, and his eldest son, the young An Xiao, has taken the throne. But all is far from well in the capital.

The Empire reels from the devastation inflicted by six years of incessant insurrection. It needs a strong and steady hand to guide it, but there is nothing but division in the imperial court.

In the provinces, the warlords rule their domains like kings, for the central government is weak and they have grown powerful from all the fighting against rebels, each commanding a force of seasoned men that answers to nobody but their lord, and the Emperor. But the Emperor is held in thrall by his mother, the Empress Dowager Qiang, and his uncle, General-in-Chief Qiang Miao.

The Empress Dowager's eunuch attendants hold much influence at court, and attempted to enthrone An Xiao's younger half-brother, An Ming, apparently in accordance with the dying Emperor Ping's wishes. Some say they still plan to, and General Qiang Miao does not trust them. His sister the Empress Dowager, however, refuses to dismiss them. Tension and mistrust are rife at court, and must soon boil over into an inevitable confrontation between Qiang Miao and the eunuchs.

Meanwhile, the Emperor's warlord retainers struggle to find a balance between their loyalty to the Empire and the threat posed by the joint regency. Some huddle in the capital, unwilling to act publicly lest they incur accusations of treason.

These men need strong warriors, smart followers, and subtle agents to aid them through their hesitancy. The capital is awash with potential for a band of clever unknowns to rise in power and fame, for the Empire cries out for salvation, and the land needs heroes!
