About Your character:

To understand Katerina, one must look at the greater picture. There exists a section of land in the Kingdom, of approximately a barony in size, that holds ancient ruins rumored to be haunted. The former Baron, a liegeman of House Von Roehm, was superstitious, and after an encounter decided to abandon those lands in favor of other, quieter ones within his demesne.

House Zaralyn, a Dukedom sworn to House Wyndham, figured that since the land no longer had a noble, he could take it. The problem was that he did not have a claim, and so he decided to send in one of his knights along with a token force to investigate. The assumption was that the local lawlessness of the area would end up with the knight getting killed, which would then be valid cause to send his forces in to take the area to 'restore the peace' and subsequently use his de facto control to plead de jure with the King later on.

The knight, however, ended up cooperating with some of the local militias to wipe out the bandits that roamed the area with impunity. With the knight doing far better than expected (and unknowingly foiling the Duke's plans), the Duke did the next best thing: He pleaded for the knight to be raised to the rank of Baron, in charge of the land he had been sent to pacify, placing them within the noble hierarchy to avoid retribution from House Von Roehm.

The levies from those lands tend to be a rather odd duckling compared to the norm. A fair few of them have experience with weapons, a culture of training their sons and daughters in them because of the (former) rampant banditry and a tendency for tactics considered unconventional according to the rules and traditions of combat in the open field. The forces one could muster from it have a comparatively much lower amount of infantry and knights, though has produced some of the better scouts and archers.

In accordance with the local customs, borne out of necessity from living in an area with (formerly) high banditry, there are a scant few people living within the borders of the barony that do not have some form of weapons training. Katerina herself is trained in longbows as well as the glaive and the more traditional longsword, something that's given her an athletic build over the years.
