Known History: Zaynab grew up at the covenant of ?, toward the west of the Iberian Tribunal. Her father was an Andalusi shield grog, and her mother was a Portuguese kitchen maid. When Zaynab became older, even though she still looked incredibly young, and was to be trained to take on a role at the covenant the magi noticed her talent with their magical items. They had her trained in Finesse so that she would become the grog in charge of various duties requiring their magical items, including much of the vis collection. Since she was already working with a lot of magical objects, the magi also had her trained in Magic Theory so she could work on their labs when she wasn't collecting vis or handling similar duties. And for many years she did her job well, becoming an appreciated servant.

After passing through puberty relatively late, Zaynab's passions became strong. Being closely involved with magical activities at the covenant she encountered visiting Redcaps often, and frequently enough they were willing to encourage her. She gave birth to her first child, Nasir, when she was 20.  His father was the Redcap Ximeno. Two years later she gave birth to the twins Maryam and Yasmina, sired by the Redcap Piers. Three years later she and Ximeno had another child, Yusuf. Only a year later she and the Redcap Khalil gave birth to Zahra.

Just as she passed through puberty late, so too did her Gift emerge late, quite late in fact. She was 27 years old, and some believed she was too old to be trained. But she appeared notably younger, so others though she was just aging slowly and there wouldn't be a problem. Constantinus of Flambeau took her on as his apprentice and made sure her children were looked after so she could devote more time to her apprenticeship. He also kept a close eye on her to make sure another pregnancy would not interrupt her training and his work. Meanwhile, House Mercere took notice, as they now had five Mercere-blooded children birthed by a Gifted maga in their sight. Constantinus was quite happy to have Zaynab's distractions reduced, and she was quite happy to have her children trained for prestigious positions, so House Mercere took her children off to be trained through the middle of Zaynab's apprenticeship.

Constantinus was a tough man trained in the School of Vilano, practiced in the Hoplomachus technique of Certamen, and a member of the Milites. His Vilano and Hoplomachus training suited her talents with Finesse quite well. He also instilled within her many of the principles of the Milites, even if she never ended up adopting the Code of Garus. ***
