Beyond the Graveyard

Premise: A young girl took refuge in a graveyard under mysterious circumstances. The ghostly inhabitants take the girl in and name her Noone. From these apparitions, she learns many things. After a few short years though, she decides to go out into the world and learn more about herself and the mysterious circumstances of her birth.

The ghosts of the graveyard decide to go with her. Some to protect the girl, some to explore the broader world, and all to learn more about themselves. And perhaps for some to bring some finality to their afterlives and move on to the next world.

However, it soon becomes clear that some larger conspiracy is afoot. Both Noone and the nameless ghosts of the old graveyard could very well spell doom for this world or become its saviors.

Notes: This game is part Phantom Brave and part The Graveyard Book, merged with a dash of epic fantasy. The players take on the roles of ghosts that shepherd and guide Noone, while at times manifesting in the world to defend her if needed.

This is a sandbox game, meaning characters will need to have a certain amount of initiative in order to drive their story forward. Many of the plot elements are things that the players themselves will bring to the table, so the need for vivid, well-realised characters is paramount. While I have a meta-narrative in mind, the players can ignore that or dive in at their own leisure.

System: I am more interested in characters and story than in system mechanics. As such, while this game uses a home-brewed version of Dungeons and Dragons, the fiction will often triumph over mechanics. I will always go the path that makes for a better story.
