The Dynamics of an Asteroid
Excitement permeates the normally staid atmosphere at Miskatonic University this fall semester 0f 1923. Though well endowed, the university can usually only afford to underwrite one scientific expedition each year. This year, however, because of an unusual confluence of interests, two expeditions will be funded. The cost saving is possible because both investigations will be take place at the same location: Kayenta, Arizona a small town in the foothills of Black Mesa.The Anthropology and Archaeology departments will be investigating the ancient cliff house dwellings of the Pueblo Indians at Betatakin, a large cave in the north wall of an unnamed south fork of Laguna Canyon, which latter empties into Tyende Creek at Marsh Pass. The location is some twenty miles west of the nearest modern town -- Kayenta.
The Astronomy and Physics departments also will be sending a crew to Kayenta to observe the arrival and likely impact of an unusual asteroid. The plan is to collect samples of the extra terrestrial materials which may be highly radioactive, and are predicted to give insight into the early history of the solar system.
Professors and students alike are vying to be included in the combined expedition which will be leaving for Arizona next week. Interested parties are submitting resumes to their advisors and department heads with cover letters explaining why they would be an excellent choice for inclusion. Anthropologists and Archaeologists, Astronomers and Physicists are putting their best foot forward.
For the professors, the chance to publish a scholarly paper based of first hand field research is a guarantee of tenure at MU or some other college. For the graduate students, their association with a prestigious venture like this will be a distinct leg up as they begin their academic careers.
