Rebecca Smith

Rebecca Smith, never Becky, and no relative of Hunter's as far as she knows, is another disabled veteran.  She is medically retired from the Navy because an accident caused her to lose most of the sight in her right eye.

She was almost 19 years old and just 5 feet tall but her classic 36-24-36 figure made her seem bigger.  Her attractive face was framed by black hair cut shoulder length.  She was shy and reserved before military service.  Medical retirement made her even more introverted.  Her family had lived on a lake in northwestern Minnesota.  They were somewhat isolated so she was home schooled.  Joining the Navy had surprised almost everyone but she was old enough that her parents could not stop her.

The injury had happened in her first week of military service.  In spite of all the safety precautions, a freak ricochet struck her right eye socket just hard enough to fracture the bone.  The bullet did not even remain there but fell to her feet and she collapsed, unconscious, on top of it.  Though she was Navy, when she woke she was in Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston and she was in a room in what she later learned was the Severe Ocular Injury Unit of that hospital.  And she couldn't see out of either eye.  Before impending panic set in, a soothing voice told her that she was in the hospital and she was being unbandaged but needed to keep her eyes shut until they told her to open them.  When she opened her eyes, the light was almost blinding until her medicated eyes reacted.

It was hen that she realized that the room lights were dimmed.  She could see people in white, doctors and nurses? but only from her left eye and not nearly normally.  It was then that she learned her right eye was still bandaged and was severely injured.  Her personal life had just fallen apart.  She was a virgin but had not expected to be one for long but the injury happened.  She withdrew into herself even though the physical injury was healing.  Mental health issues in the military were not well addressed but Rebecca needed that kind of treatment.  The VA didn't provide it.  She was close to becoming a fatal causality due to PTSD when met Beth at a small bar frequented by disabled veterans.  It was near the VA Hospital and an ideal environment to slowly, or not so slowly, die in.

She had joined the Navy to see the world as that old slogan said.  She expected to date other sailors until she finally found her true love.  Losing her virginity along the way was a given.  None of that happened thanks to the injury.  Although it was Beth that hired her, she sees Hunter often enough.  She had heard all about him through water cooler and break room gossip.  She was not certain who she might be attracted to more, Beth or Hunter.  Neither had made the slightest overture.  If they had, she probably would have surrendered her V card.

From what she could see, the mailman wasn't wearing a ring but he looked old.  She'd see him next week and maybe learn more.
