Fifth Business the term for a role in a play that is neither Hero nor Heroine, Confidante nor Villain, but which is none the less essential to bringing about the Recognition or the Dénouement.This is a solo Call of Cthulhu adventure set in modern day Washington, DC. The protagonist (you) is a detective of some sort -- you decide what sort. Obvious choices might include an FBI agent, a DC metro police detective, a private detective or someone from JAG, NCIS, the Secret Service, the CIA, etc. -- the list of potential backgrounds is large. But the choice is yours. Because the case is not an official one.
You have been approached by a powerful associate (your boss, or her boss) to take on a private investigation on behalf of a US senator. The senator's niece has gone missing. The official police position is that she is a young woman who has likely taken off with a young man of her own volition. The senator is not buying it, but his influence with the Metro police is limited because of certain political positions he has taken on their funding and performance over the past few years.
Instead he has instructed his chief of staff to "get the bottom of things" -- which has lead to you. You've had some successes in the past, and seem to know what you're doing when it comes to investigations. Would you be willing to investigate the disappearance of Sarah Jones? All your expenses will be paid and there's reward for finding her.
