Swords and Walking-Sticks

“Then something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go and see the great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking-stick.”

You live in Middle-Earth, in the northern lands.

The Witch-King of Angmar disappeared hundreds of years ago-- somewhere to the south, they say-- after destroying three kingdoms of men...

500 years ago, a sorcerer called "The Necromancer" took up residence in the south of the Greenwood, and enchanted it so that it began to be called Mirkwood instead. When the good wizard Gandalf the Gray investigated, with others of his kind, The Necromancer abandoned his tower there, Dol Guldur, and fled to the south for a time...

Just couple of years ago, a halfling and some dwarves, with the encouragement (and aid) of the wizard Gandalf, crossed the Wilderland, and roused the dragon Smaug out of the Lonely Mountain. He attacked the nearby human town of Lake Town, but he was slain. The promise of the dragon's horde brought together three armies, of humans, wood elves, and dwarves, who-- with the help of an army of giant eagles-- withstood an attack from a fifth army of goblins and wargs.

The goblins and wargs wouldn't mind getting revenge on the other inhabitants of the Wilderland in revenge for losing the War of Five Armies...

The other inhabitants of The Wilderlands are just as eager to try to rid themselves of the threats of goblins, wargs, and dark things, and to make the Wilderlands more safe...

But there are rumors that The Necromancer may have returned to Mirkwood...

This will be a modified version of the very simple rpg THERE AND BACK AGAIN by Ray Otus: https://rayotus.itch.io/taba

You'll be adventuring in the world of the FIRST edition of THE HOBBIT. Bilbo's ring was just a fun ring of invisibility, Gollum was way more chill, "orc" is just the elven word for "goblin," there is no "Saruman," no one's ever heard of "Sauron," and so on.

Come be a halfling, dwarf, elf, human, or something stranger, adventuring in The Wilderlands...
