Songs of the Elfstones

Premise: When the elves crossed the threshold of Faerie and into the Middle-realm, they brought with them several gemstones of great beauty and wonder. These, one by one, became lost over the years, through tragedy, arrogance, and small twists of fate.

And yet now at long last, an Elfstone has been found in the unlikeliest of places.

At the edge of the Known World was a region called the Westmarch, far from the machinations of the Great Powers. The land was once vassal to the Old Kingdom, but the great dynasties fell and left the realm in chaos. There in a small valley was a sleepy village called Lindheim, where most of its residents were destined to be born, live, and die without ever setting foot into the world beyond.

Elvish princes, mighty Kings, and enigmatic Magi all seek the Elfstone. Even the dread Dark Lord has set their sight on that most precious of gems. Not for the power it possesses, but for the doom it portends during the end of days.

The Final Battle is almost nigh.

Notes: Songs of the Elfstones takes place in a secondary world inspired by The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Wheel of Time, Abhorsen, and other works of epic fantasy. The aim is to let players experience the hero’s journey, to feel what it means to go adventuring in a wild and perilous land, out of a forgotten past, as well as to create unique ring-cycle after the fashion of the aforementioned The Lord of the Rings, Nibelungenlied, or the Volsunga Saga.

It is a dangerous, threatening world that has more in common with the world depicted in Nordic sagas or with the Dark Ages of Europe than with our contemporary world. Players are invited to leave the age of information and fast travel behind, and adopt the point of view of individuals whose horizons often did not extend further than a few miles from their birthplace.

Some threats you may face:

However, not all may be as it seems and more may lie below the surface. That which appears fair may be most foul indeed.

System: I am more interested in characters and story than in system mechanics. As such, while this game uses a heavily modified, home-brewed version of Dungeons and Dragons, the fiction will often triumph over mechanics. I will always go the path that makes for a better story.
