The Song of Ilion

An epic tale of daring heroes, with adventure, romance, betrayal, and even death.

Premise: When a lustful Ilian prince abducted Eleni, the beautiful queen of Lakadaemon, her husband vowed to recover her no matter the cost. Calling on his brother, the King of Mykeia, together they mustered the whole of the Hallian host at Avlis and invoked the Oath of Tyndareos, the suitors' oath, an oath sworn beforehand by all the suitors of Eleni that they would provide military assistance in the case of her abduction.

News of this vile treachery reached the City of Dris, where the reactions were... mixed. There were not often times in an Age where such glory was within reach, and the treasury of Ilion was rumoured to be rich indeed. But few were willing to make the trek to a far distant land to fight a war that had nothing to do with them.

Yet, the suitors' oath applied to all or it applied to none. And the gods demanded that the Ten Tribes of Indra honour their oaths.

So began the Song of Ilion.

Notes: The Song of Ilion follows the perspectives of a single Indrevite family and how they and their City become embroiled in the wider war between the Hallians and the Prassians. See the Request to Join document for more details.

It is difficult to describe the themes in a tale so large, but some ideas I'd like to explore are: the nature of kingship and what makes a good, or bad, leader; the relationship between kings and subjects; fighting a war that is not your own; the interaction between divinity and mortality; prophecy and fate and how one meets their doom; and perhaps others as they strike me.

Historical, or even literary, accuracy is not really the aim of this game, unless it makes for a better story. This should be a tale about larger-than-life heroes first and foremost. However, the characters and setting should still be recognizably based on Greco-Roman mythology, mostly the <i>Epic Cycle, and the broader Mediterranean civilization around it.

System: Over the years, I've developed the minimal RPG system, a home-brewed system that I use in play-by-post games. Its virtues are that it's very minimal and doesn't get in the way of telling a good story, but most importantly, it allows players to play the kinds of characters they want to play.
