Orphans of a Thousand Worlds

Premise: A group of orphans spent most of their lives at Harrington School, a luxurious but strict and secretive boarding school. Their caretakers and chaperones, the faculty and staff, were strict but fair, and allowed them the freedom to explore the grounds, to read the books in the library, provided them excellent food and a world-class education. They were only forbidden from visiting the outside world until they reached the age of their majority. Everything about their true origins, from their parentage to their names to their age, were a complete mystery.

The children were each inquisitive, precocious, more than just prodigies. They soon discovered they were different from the other children they so rarely saw. That they possessed unique paranormal abilities and might not even be human. The children must experiment with and learn to control their strange abilities, but to what end, they must decide for themselves.

Will they save the world or become the harbinger of its destruction?

Notes: The game has its roots in boarding school fantasies like Harry Potter, The Promised Neverland, and the Chronicles of Chaos. During the course of play, the game should be equally comfortable with contemporary, fantastical, or science fiction ideas and settings.

Some ideas and themes I'd like to explore for this game are the discovery of secrets and truth; fighting against or embracing one's own nature or destiny; and how some problems sometimes do not have simple solutions. The biggest theme, of course, is the coming of age, or the bildungsroman, as so often occurs during these sorts of stories.

System: Over the years, I've developed the minimal RPG system, a home-brewed system that I use in play-by-post games. Its virtues are that it's very minimal and doesn't get in the way of telling a good story, but most importantly, it allows players to play the kinds of characters they want to play.
