Battle Hymn of the Old Kingdom
Premise: Beyond the grey lands of the West Marches, at the edge of the Known World, slept the vast and ancient Old Kingdom. Many were drawn there, searching for riches, or glory, or answers to forgotten secrets. Many adventurers from far-distant realms were called to explore its mysteries, to conquer its evils. Those that heeded its call never returned.Notes: Battle Hymn of the Old Kingdom takes place in a secondary world inspired by The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Wheel of Time, Abhorsen, and other works of epic fantasy. However, it takes its design cues more from the Metroidvania or Soulslike video game genres. It could even be called a "West Marches campaign." There is a heavy emphasis on exploration, environmental storytelling, and character development through treasure.
Some threats you may face:
- Wandering monsters
- Wakened barrow kings
- Warring goblin tribes
- Inscrutable raiding orcs
- Rampaging werewolves
- Dark elves from Deep Below
- Pillaging giants
- Hoarding dragons
However, not all may be as it seems and more may lie below the surface. That which appears fair may be most foul indeed.
